Volunteers say canal centre parking charges could be ‘devastating’

More than 4,000 people have signed a petition opposing car parking charges being introduced to a Canal Centre in Newport. The Fourteen Lock’s centre’s run by volunteers and last year it welcomed more than sixty thousand visitors. Those who work there say the charges could be devastating as many volunteers wouldn’t be able to afford them.

  1. Money raised from parking charges would NOT go back into the facilities at the visitor centre as the centre is LEASED and financed by the local canal trust. The council only controls the car park and the purpose of charging parking is to raise revenue to help balance their finances for the forthcoming financial year and beyond.
